TN police chase woman who extracted money from people using Cobra

Chennai, Feb. 26 (IANS): Tamil Nadu police launched a hunt for a woman who scared people with a cobra and extorted money from them.

After a video of the cobra woman went viral, police filed a suo motu case against her.

An officer from Tambaram Police Station told IANS the woman appeared to be a nomad and a snake charmer. She had told locals that she belonged to Villupuram, he said.

Police said the woman was going house to house in Meppadu in Tambaram asking for money and clothes. In case of refusal, she took a snake out of a basket and frightened the inhabitants.

Sukumaran Nair, a resident of Meppadu, told IANS: “One morning, the woman came to ask for money. In the houses, when people refused to give her money, she opened a basket and played an instrument that a cobra slithered on. The horrified locals gave her money and clothes and sent her away. Someone filmed the incident which went viral and was noticed by the police.

He said the woman told people that her son lives in Tambaram and she used to wear the cobra whenever she visited her son by train.

Forest agents have also joined the police in the hunt for the woman.
