Tiruchi police crack down on goat thieves, recover 60 animals

Chennai, November 29 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Police Tiruchi lineup launched a crackdown on goat thieves in the area and recovered 60 goats worth Rs 3 lakh.

The goats were turned over to owners through the courts, police said.

The crackdown follows goat thieves who killed Tiruchi police sub-inspector S. Bhoominathan. The officer who pursued the thieves at midnight was murdered by thieves.

Police arrested 19-year-old goat thief, Manikantan, and two minors, aged 14 and 11, in connection with the murder.

Central Zone Police Inspector General V. Balakrishna said in a statement Monday that instructions had been given to district police superintendents to crack down on goat thieves.

Tiruchi police personnel, including Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, registered 12 cases and arrested four people from November 23 to 28.

Three cases were registered by Tiruchi Rural Police, eight were registered in Pudukottai District and one in Karur District.

The IG said a special team comprising a sub-inspector and police officers is being assembled in the Tiruchi shooting range and instructions have been given to enforce a strict crackdown on goat thieves.

Police have also issued strict instructions to regularly monitor cases of goat theft and to arrest those involved and display their photographs and names.

However, local people said there were more goat thieves in the open and it was a cartel with close ties spread across four to five districts.

Local goat herders have said that although they get their hands on thieves in general, they are attacked with machetes and iron bars and the thieves escape.
