Mangaluru, July 14: The University of Mangalore has a significant number of international students. To accommodate them, a separate, world-class hostel is being built on the university campus. This building is expected to be completed by September of this year.
140 students from 29 countries including Afghanistan, China, Indonesia, Iran, South Africa and Nepal studied at the University of Mangalore. For the next academic year, 220 foreign students have applied for admission.
Until now, these students did not have a well-equipped separate home. Therefore, they are currently staying in rented buildings in Derlakatte. In order to address their problem, the hostel, equipped with international facilities, is being built on the premises of the university.
Work on this project had started five years ago, but government approval for this multi-crore project was pending. The university was waiting for approval and had used its own money as construction had started by then. The ministry has now approved the project. The rest of the hostel blocks were intended to be used for the accommodation review block and the VVIP guesthouse. Some departments of the University should be moved to another block.
Exam complex: All of the state’s universities have separate exam blocks, but the University of Mangalore did not. It is currently operating on the ground floor of the administrative block. As its location created problems for students and staff, a plan to create an exam block was devised. Now it is planned to reserve the block next to the international hostel for the exam block. Sources said permission for the same will be obtained at the union’s meeting scheduled for the 24th of this month.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Professor PS Yadapadithaya, said the building of the international-class hostel for foreign students was in the final stages and that due to the lockdown work had been delayed. He said it will be inaugurated in September. The building has four blocks, and apart from the exam block, the VVIP guesthouse and a few chairs from the university will also be moved to this building.
