The Brussels police block the “Freedom Convoy” demonstration

Brussels, February 15 (IANS): Belgian federal and local police forces blocked the Canadian-style motorcade “Freedom Convoy” which planned to block Brussels with a demonstration in the capital’s city center.

“We spotted between 400 and 500 cars and motorhomes. About 30 vehicles were blocked, while the others evaporated into the wild,” Brussels mayor Philippe Close told RTBF radio on Monday.

Police have been deployed to the outskirts of Brussels to prevent protesters’ vehicles from entering the city, reports the Xinha news agency.

About 130 vehicles, including those from France and the Netherlands, were redirected to the Brussels Expo car park on the outskirts of the city, the only place where static action was tolerated.

“Protesters must not hold the capital hostage,” Close said.

In the city center, a few gatherings of around a hundred people were observed in various places, in the Quays district and around the Parc du Cinquantenaire in particular.

Thirty people were arrested, said the Brussels-Capital police.

Meanwhile, police forces were also deployed at Brussels Airport, where a group of protesters blocked the main routes.

The organizers of the demonstration had not received permission to demonstrate.

The “Freedom Convoy” protests were launched in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, by truckers opposed to a vaccination or quarantine mandate for cross-border drivers.
