Madrid, April 14 (IANS): The Spanish Civil Guard and the police of northern Spanish Navarre have confirmed that they have dismantled the largest illegal marijuana plantation in Europe.
The plantation was discovered between the towns of Artajona and Olite in Navarre, covering 67 hectares and containing nearly 415,000 plants, Xinhua news agency reported.
The owner of the plantation said it produces hemp for industrial use. However, the agents became suspicious when they saw that the final destination of the plants was countries like Switzerland and Italy, where this type of plant can be transformed into cannabidiol (CBD).
Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday for running a large warehouse in Artajona, which was equipped with a ventilation and temperature control system for drying plants.
Police intercepted a truck preparing to leave for Italy carrying 23,000 dried cannabis plants, while some 13,000 plants were found inside the warehouse.
Police said all of these plants were destroyed, along with the plants still growing on the plantation, which would be worth around 30 million euros when turned into CBD.
