Russian underage rape case: Goa police to search Karnataka defendant’s criminal record

Panaji, May 12 (IANS): Police in Goa will ask their counterpart in Karnataka for the criminal record of a person accused of raping a 12-year-old Russian girl at a compound in Arambol.

The accused, Ravi Lamani (28), worked as a room attendant at the resort, where the incident took place on May 6.

Pernem Police Station Police Inspector Vikram Naik told IANS that the accused Ravi Lamani was arrested by a Pernem Police squad on May 10 in Gadag in Karnataka.

Responding to a question whether the accused had a criminal record, Naik said this was the first case registered against him at Pernem Police Station, but they would seek a report from Karnataka Police. . “We will definitely contact the Gadag-Karnataka Police to check if the accused has a past criminal record,” he said.

Lamani had fled to his hometown after the incident.

He informed that the victim’s mother filed a complaint that her minor daughter was sexually assaulted in the resort’s swimming pool and later in the hotel room by the accused on the same day they arrived at the resort.

Goa Police say the victim’s mother had gone to the market, leaving her daughter alone in the compound, before the incident happened.

Pernem Police have registered a case against Lamani under IPC Section 376 (Rape), Section 8 of Goa Children Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO ).
