Punjab police thwart possible terrorist attack, one has taken place

Chandigarh, November 24 (IANS): With the arrest of a highly radicalized agent identified as Ranjit Singh of Tarn Taran, linked to terrorist entities based abroad, Punjab police claimed on Wednesday that they had foiled another possible terrorist attack.

Police recovered two Chinese-made P-86 hand grenades and two pistols as well as cartridges, as well as a black Royal Enfield motorcycle in their possession, Police Director General Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota said here.

He said that based on information about Ranjit Singh’s presence in the Amritsar region, special teams were dispatched to the specified area to locate the suspect and Ranjit Singh was apprehended.

This development comes at a time when the Punjab has witnessed a massive influx of hand grenades and tiffin bombs along with other weapons.

Recently, the state has also witnessed a few grenade explosions, notably in the Pathankot cantonment area, in addition to the recovery of an unexploded hand grenade in the Zira area.

The DGP said during the investigation, Ranjit Singh revealed that he had formed a group named “Kaum De Rakhe” to raise funds under the pretext of social work and through this group he came into contact with various radical and terrorist elements based in UK and other countries via social media.

He said that recently Ranjit Singh had received a shipment of weapons and explosives and was planning to carry out a terrorist attack to create an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness in the border state.

The DGP said Ranjit Singh was part of a group that had vandalized statues of folk dancers installed on the heritage street leading to the Golden Temple in Amritsar on January 15, 2020.

Arrested in the statue vandalism case, he was currently on bail, he added.
