Chandigarh, May 8 (IANS): Foiling a major targeted assassination attempt, Punjab police said on Sunday they had arrested a defendant in Kharar near here.
The arrested, identified as Gurinder Singh, alias Guri Shera of Fathegarh Sahib, has a criminal past and six cases including extortion, Arms Act, snatching, dacoity have already been registered against him in the state.
Police also recovered two .30 caliber pistols and one .32 caliber pistol along with 10 cartridges in his possession.
Giving details, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Ropar Range, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that following entries that Guri Shera and his associate identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Jony, of the district of Patiala were engaged in illicit arms smuggling, a case was registered against them at Kharar town police station in SAS Nagar.
He said acting on the tip, police teams under the supervision of Chief Superintendent of Police Vivek Sheel Soni apprehended Guri Shera on Saturday and recovered three pistols and ammunition in his possession.
During the initial investigation, Guri revealed that he used to source arms and ammunition from states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and he was directed by a Europe-based handler. to target an individual in a major town in Punjab, DIG Bhullar said.
The accused was also given Rs 1.50 lakh to purchase weapons and ammunition and logistical support to commit this sensational crime. They were also delivering these weapons to their gang members in Punjab, he said.
The DIG said further investigations are underway to unravel the plot and that Guri’s assistant, Gurpreet Singh, will also be arrested soon.
