Police record 3 FIRs in confrontation that erupted at Mangalore Middle School

While the Karnataka High Court is yet to rule on the hijab ban in educational institutions, three lawsuits have been filed in Mangaluru after a clash between two groups of students over wearing the hijab during exams .

“Three FIRs have been registered after a confrontation erupted between two groups on Thursday over allowing a few girls to attend internal exams wearing hijab,” Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said on Tuesday. Kumar said that “a case is registered on the complaint of a female student against some students and 15 members of ABVP for threatening and hurting her religious feelings”.

“The second case was filed on a student’s complaint (against the complainant in the first case) and six others on the charges of threats and intimidation,” the police commissioner said.

“The third FIR is also filed on the complaint of one of the students,” a police officer said.

The controversy surrounding the hijab in educational institutions has recently arisen in Karnataka, after several female students from the Government Girls PU College in the Udupi region began protesting in January against the school management for having them apparently prevented from attending classes.

At the rallies, some female students claimed that they had been denied admission to the institution because they wore the hijab.

Following this incident, students from different colleges arrived at Shanteshwar Education Trust in Vijayapura wearing saffron stoles. The situation was the same in several colleges in the Udupi district.
The board of pre-college education has issued a circular stating that students can only wear uniforms approved by the school administration and that no other religious practices will be allowed in colleges.
