Police in Mangaluru City and Dakshina Kannada District on Wednesday began issuing advisories to operators of public places, including religious, business, commercial and entertainment venues, to maintain ambient noise standards prescribed by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.

Issued by Jurisdictional Station Officers to relevant institutions, the notices state that noise from institutions must not exceed levels prescribed under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules 2010 of the Protection Act 1986 of the environment.

The rules prescribe maximum noise levels in different areas as follows: it must not exceed 75 and 70 decibels in an industrial area during the day (6 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and night (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.), respectively, while the prescribed levels for commercial areas are 65 and 55 decibels, residential areas 55 and 45 decibels and for quiet areas 50 and 40 decibels. Police notices warn operators that if they violate prescribed standards of noise levels, they will be held liable under applicable rules.

Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar told reporters here that police have identified 1,001 such locations where loudspeakers are used within police station boundaries. Notices are served on these institutions asking them to maintain ambient noise standards when using loudspeakers. As many as 357 temples, 168 masjids, 95 churches, 106 educational institutions, 60 industrial units, 98 entertainment venues, 68 wedding halls and program venues and 49 other public venues receive such notices, he said. declared.

Actions will be taken against the operators of such venues if noise levels exceed prescribed limits, Mr Kumar said.

Meanwhile, district police have also started sending out notices to 331 such locations across Dakshina Kannada, Police Superintendent Rishikesh Sonawane said.

Some of the prominent places that have received notices in the city include Mangaladevi Temple, Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple, Bishop’s House Church, Valencia Church, Kateel Durgaparameshwari Temple, Idgah Jumma Masjid in Bavutagudde , Masjid Central Market, Outdoor Solutions-Kallapu, River Dale-Jeppinamogaru, all malls and many more.
