Chennai, March 16 (IANS): A Dindigul Police special team on Wednesday shot and killed a notorious gangster, Neeravi Murugan, during an encounter in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
Tirunelveli District Police Commissioner P. Saravanan said in a statement on Wednesday that Dindigul Police Team cornered Murugan in a case related to a robbery at Kalakad in Tirunelveli.
Murugan attacked the police and the sub-inspector of the Dindigul police team. In response, the police fired a bullet at him which killed the notorious mobster on the spot.
Police said four cops suffered head and face injuries after being attacked with a sickle by Murugan and that Deputy Inspector Isakki Raja had to shoot in self-defense.
Tirunelveli District Police Superintendent Saravanan said Murugan also attacked police earlier and was a notorious criminal involved in robberies, citation attacks as well as property encroachments.
Kalakkad Police have registered a case and further investigation is ongoing.
Murugan’s body is sent for autopsy at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital.
Murugan had over 60 criminal cases including murders against him in various districts of Tamil Nadu and a video of him forcing a female teacher to part with her gold ornaments went viral after being recorded by a passerby.
