Mangaluru: Man detained for attempted robbery dies in police custody, investigation ordered

Mangaluru, February 18: A person who attempted to steal iron bars from a Smart City project site near Jyothi, Balmatta died hours after being arrested by police. The incident was reported here on Friday, February 18.

The deceased was identified as Rajesh (30), a resident of Urwa.

Police sources said that around 3.30am on Friday, Rajesh and his accomplice tried to steal iron bars near Ambedkar circle. The battered officers who were on duty caught them and informed Bunder police, who took them into custody.

The two defendants were brought to Bunder police station and questioned, during which they revealed that they were alcoholics and attempted to steal the iron in order to sell them for money to buy alcohol. Later, the police gave them snacks and breakfast and kept them in custody.

However, on Friday afternoon Rajesh complained of chest pains and was rushed to Wenlock Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Speaking to reporters, Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said that according to a complaint filed by the family of the deceased man, Rajesh had been addicted to alcohol since he was 18 and had the used to walk with friends at night. However, as the death occurred while he was in police custody, the family requested an investigation into the matter. His community leaders have also approached the police to demand a full investigation.

Accepting the request, the Commissioner of Police said the matter would be investigated by CPA Mahesh Kumar, and there would also be a full inquest. The police commissioner also said CCTV cameras will be checked.
