Mangalore University students allege misuse of High Court verdict by colleges

Members of Mangalore University’s Student Coordinating Committee staged a protest on Friday alleging that some colleges were misusing the High Court’s judgment against students.

The Karnataka High Court on March 15 dismissed petitions seeking permission to wear the hijab or headscarf inside classrooms, observing that it was not part of the essential religious practice of Islam.

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant an urgent hearing on pleas challenging the verdict of the Karnataka High Court.

Meanwhile, a video of a Muslim girl wearing a hijab and allegedly offering namaz in a classroom has prompted Dr Harisingh Gour University (HGU), a central university, in Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, to order an investigation. over the complaint by a right-wing organization, an official said on Saturday.

A memorandum demanding action was submitted to the university by Hindu Jagran Manch after a music video was released.

HGU Registrar Santosh Sahgaura told PTI a complaint was received along with a video clip.

“A five-member committee has been set up to look into this matter. The committee will submit a report within three days and further action will be taken based on this report,” he said.

HGU media officer Vivek Jaiswal said there is no formal dress code for students on campus at the educational institution, but students are required to attend ” basic ethical attire”.

Hindu Jagran Manch Sagar Unit Chairman Umesh Saraf told PTI that the girl in the video has been attending conferences wearing the hijab for a long time.

“Such religious activities should not be allowed in educational institutions. She came in hijab for a long time but was seen offering Namaz inside the classroom on Friday afternoon. reprehensible as educational institutions are a place for every religion. A complaint in this regard has been submitted to the Vice Chancellor and Registrar,” he said referring to the verdict of the Karnataka High Court.
