Toronto, April 13 (IANS): Toronto police have arrested the killer of Indian student Kartik Vasudev, who was shot in the heart of Toronto on April 7.
Richard Jonathan Edwin, 39, was taken into custody after police found him from video footage.
Police say the accused fired several shots at the 21-year-old Indian student outside Sherbourne Tube Station around 5pm last Thursday and then fled after the shooting.
Two days after killing the Indian student, the accused shot and killed another person – identified as Elijah Eleazar Mahepath, 35 – as he walked down a city street, hitting the victim with several shots and then fleeing from the scene.
According to Toronto Police Chief James Ramer, the suspect was found based on CCTV footage and arrested at his Toronto home on Sunday evening.
The police also seized numerous loaded weapons, including a rifle, from the accused.
The police chief said: “My personal opinion is that there were going to be more casualties. When, I don’t know, but he had an arsenal at his house and, quite frankly, I don’t think it was can – be just a first step.”
Police said the victims were not known to the accused.
The accused, who was charged with two counts of first degree murder, appeared in court in Toronto.
As he has no criminal record, police said they are gathering information to find out the motive for the murders of Kartik Vasudev and the 35-year-old Toronto man.
