JD(U), NPF to support BJP government in Manipur

Imphal, March 12 (IANS): The Janata Dal (United) and the Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Saturday announced their support for the BJP-led government in Manipur, party sources said.

The JD(U), which fielded 38 candidates in recent Assembly elections, won six seats, while the NPF, which fielded 10 candidates, won five seats compared to four seats won in the 2017 elections in the Assembly.

JD(U) National Office Secretary Mohammad Nisar said in a statement that in the interest of the people of Manipur, the party has decided to support the BJP in forming the government.

The JD(U) would like to appeal to the BJP to honor the mandate given to the party and fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people of Manipur, the statement said.

He said party lawmakers unanimously elected Khumukcham Joykisan Singh as leader of the JD(U) Legislative Party in the presence of Afaque Ahmad Khan, National General Secretary, in charge of the North East region.

NPF General Secretary Achumbemo Kikon said the party supports the BJP government bearing in mind its association with the saffron camp since 2017.

NPF sources said the party would likely seek a few positions in the new ministry.

The BJP secured an outright majority on its own and retained power in Manipur for the second consecutive term by winning 32 seats in the 60-member Assembly.

The BJP first came to power in Manipur in 2017, in alliance with four National People’s Party (NPP) MPs, four NPF members, Trinamool’s sole Congress MP and one independent member.

The NPP, a distant ally of the BJP, which won seven seats, announced that it would act as the opposition party in Manipur.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh met Governor La Ganesan on Friday and resigned from his post. The Governor asked him to continue in his functions until the new government takes the reins.

There is no confirmation yet as to when the next chief minister will be chosen, or when the new BJP-led government will take office.

Before the election, the BJP had unofficially declared that Singh would be the main ministerial face of the party and lead the next government.
