HC sends notice to Delhi LG and police for Okhla encroachment plea

New Delhi, February 23 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Office of the Lieutenant Governor (LG), Delhi Police, among others, on a plea alleging encroachment and illegal construction in the nation’s capital’s Okhla Industrial Zone .

A panel of Judges Manmohan and Navin Chawla also sought the response of other respondents – the chairman of the Delhi State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (DSIIDC) and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and scheduled a rehearing on March 24.

The court viewed a letter in the matter as public interest litigation. The plea argued that the illegal construction had not been removed by authorities despite court orders. He further pointed out that residents are facing problems due to illegal land grabbing and public roads.

He said that Tekhand village falls under the jurisdiction of Okhla Phase 1 which is currently not under the control and maintenance of DSIIDC and his office only maintains the internal roads of Okhla Industrial Zone. Phase 3 and is not responsible for the maintenance of the main roads on which DTC buses commute.

During the hearing, the court observed that, according to the minutes of a previous meeting with the LG, it was noted that the respective municipal corporations should take the necessary measures to eliminate encroachments on common areas in as part of a joint operation with DSIIDC and Delhi Police.
