Haveri, September 22: The vehicles of the district health officer and the government maternity doctor were impounded for delay in paying compensation to the family of a woman who died in childbirth due to medical negligence.

Saroja from Kakol village in the taluk had been admitted for childbirth at the government maternity hospital here in November 2007. Her delivery went without incident but later started to bleed profusely. She died in hospital the same day.

The lady’s husband had filed a lawsuit claiming medical negligence caused his wife’s death. The court, which held the hearing, ordered the payment of compensation of five milky rupees to the family of the deceased. Pursuant to an order issued on July 7, 2014, the court requested the Haveri District Deputy Commissioner and the District Health Officer to pay this compensation. As the district health worker had not paid compensation so far, the second judge of the district and sessions court ordered the vehicles to be impounded.

The lawyer KN Deshpande had pleaded the case on behalf of the relatives of the deceased.
