New Delhi, April 3 (IANS): Delhi police on Sunday denied all reports that five journalists had been detained at the site of an unauthorized Hindu Mahapanchayat.
“Some of the journalists, voluntarily, of their own free will, to escape the crowds that were agitated by their presence, sat in a PCR van parked at the scene and chose to go to the police station for reasons of security”, DCP (north-west) says Usha Rangnani. She further stated that the required police protection had been provided to the said journalists and that no one had been detained.
Notably, a Delhi-based journalist had tweeted that he and four journalists had been detained by police after two journalists from the minority community among them were assaulted by a crowd present at Burari field in northwest Delhi. In his tweet, he had alleged that “anti-Muslim” hate speech had been made by the speakers present.
Another journalist, who was also taken to the police vehicle, tweeted that he had been beaten because of his identity.
“Community insults were hurled at me… We went there to cover the event. We were called jihadists and attacked because we are Muslims,” he alleged.
Meanwhile, DCP Rangnani said necessary action will be taken against those who have been involved in spreading false information.
