Dakshina Kannada Public School decides not to allow namaz on premises

The School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) of a public upper primary school in Dakshina Kannada district, which met on February 12 to discuss an incident involving some students namaz in a classroom on February 11, decided not to allow such incidents to happen again. The meeting also decided that no student should be sent during school hours to offer prayers.

The meeting came after a video clip of seven students from class V, class VI and class VII of the school, at Ankathadka in Kadaba taluk, doing namaz Friday went viral on social media.

According to an official, the parents of the seven pupils take them during the lunch break to a nearby mosque for the afternoon namaz. On February 11, because the parents did not show up on time for school, these children namaz in the classroom, which was filmed and posted on social media.

Upon learning of this, officials from the Education Department and the police rushed to the school.

The meeting of SDMC members held on February 12 at the school was attended by Block Education Officer C. Lokesh. Members of the local gram panchayat were also present.

After careful discussion, it was decided that students would not be allowed to offer namaz in the school premises. It was also decided that students would not be sent during school hours for prayers.

The parents of the seven pupils, who are part of the SDMC, have accepted the decision, the official said The Hindu.
