Coimbatore cyber police warn locals against loan app pitfalls

Chennai, May 8 (IANS): Coimbatore Police’s cybersecurity wing has warned residents against mobile apps luring people into lending traps.

In a statement on Saturday, the cybersecurity wing said simply downloading these loan apps would cause problems.

Police said there are over 300 loan apps and once one is downloaded there will be regular calls and harassment for sharing personal information.

While borrowers will have to share Aadhar, PAN and photographs of the applicant, contacts and other gallery details are also transferred into the app account by loan app providers.

“Fraud Alert” messages are sent to the contact details of the person who took the loan if he has not repaid it on time and also defames the person by creating WhatsApp groups with these contacts.

Police said that even after the loan was fully repaid, the app company staff were blackmailing and taking money from people.

More than 30 complaints have been registered with the cybersecurity wing in recent weeks, according to the statement.

Police said strict action will be taken against those behind the apps.
