Bombay, April 11: The city’s crime branch arrested a Govandi couple and seized about two kg of heroin worth Rs 5.80 crore on Thursday, April 7. The police also seized money of Rs 76,500 from them, which can be called one of the biggest drug seizures. The arrested defendants are identified as Shamim Khalid Khan (52) and his accomplice Rafiq Hussain Shaikh (67). Shamim’s husband, Khalid Khan, is already in prison in another drug trafficking case. The police booked the duo under the relevant sections of the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
Deputy Police Commissioner Neelotpal, along with the city’s Criminal Branch Unit 3 led by Inspector Sopan Kakad, spotted a woman who was wanted by police for possession of narcotics. Police found two bottles of water in her possession and upon checking it was found that she had stored the contraband in the bottles.
“Police then found white powder, later identified as heroin, weighing over 1.935 kg, worth 5.8 crores,” an official said. Thursday’s campaign led to the arrest of 74 people and the seizure of banned drugs worth 1.61 lac.
